When to Visit Moab for Canyoneering

The spring and fall months of March through May and September through November are typically the most pleasant temperature-wise and are generally the best times of the year for canyoneering.  Here's what you need to know when you visit Moab in the summer or any month!

In the hot summer months of June through August, Entrajo, Medieval Chamber, and Pleiades canyons are good trips due to the shortness of the first two and the abundance of water in Entrajo and Pleiades. Afternoon trips into Entrajo Canyon in the summertime are shaded by the canyon walls, and really quite pleasant.

The off-season winter months of December through February can be a fantastic time to explore Moab and the guides will choose canyons that get good sun exposure. As a bonus, you can find deals on lodging during this time of year.

Tips For an Epic Moab Canyoneering Trip

  • If you're looking to explore slot canyons, choose the Irish Canyons or the North Wash trips.
  • If you're looking to spend less time driving and only have a half day, choose the canyons closer to town like Entrajo, Pool Arch, Medievil Chamber

What is the lowest cost canyoneering trip in Moab?

Chamisa / Entrajo Canyon is one of the lowest-priced trips in Moab ranging from $115 to $135. Price varies based on duration, what's included, private vs. group and the company.

Does the duration include driving time?

Yes. The duration of the trips shown on TripOutside include the total amount on the trip from when you arrive at the outfitter location to the time when you're back at the office. Please note: duration times can vary based on the size of the groups, abilities of the group, and other factors like a number of people that may be exploring the canyon that day in Moab.

Are the canyoneering trips kid-friendly?

Yes! Each trip has an age requirement listed on it. Most outfitters will take kids as young as 5 years old on the canyoneering trips. Typically, guides base age limits based on the trip and if there is a mandatory commitment to a rappel or a difficult feature. For example, if there is an unavoidable 100 ft. rappel, the age limit for that trip may be a bit higher than a trip where you have an option to skip a rappel and hike around it.

The guides can work with you to help you plan the best canyon for your trip. In general, the Irish Canyons / North Wash offer shorter rappels, around 40 feet and you can spend a lot of time exploring the canyons by hiking and rock scrambling. Near town, Entrajo Canyon does not have significant exposure when compared to other canyons.

Can you take a guided canyoneering trip in Arches National Park or in Canyonlands National Park?

Professionally guided canyoneering trips are not allowed in the National Parks, so TripOutside guides do not offer canyoneering in either Canyonlands or Arches National Park. However, there are plenty of incredible canyoneering adventures offered just outside of the parks.
