Description

Medieval Chamber Canyoneering & Rappelling America’s Longest Natural Bridge

Many come to Moab, Utah seeking connection with nature among the towering red rocks and the opportunity to view majestic natural arches, only to be met by congested trailheads and photo-op lines in the popular national parks. An excursion for the adrenaline inclined, this canyoneering adventure offers respite from both crowds and heat within the classic slot canyons of Medieval Chamber and Grandstaff.
Not only does this unique, five hour trip offer guests views of sandstone formations from both above and below the desert floor, but the opportunity to experience Morning Glory, a classic natural bridge arch in all of its glory. Along with the initial rappel into Medieval Chamber, participants will have the chance to walk along the 243 foot natural bridge, before free-rappelling the 120 feet to the canyon floor. Participants will then continue to descend through Grandstaff Canyon toward the mighty Colorado River, for a grand total of three miles.

Location

Paddle Moab excursions meet at their office location in Moab: 44 West 200 North Moab, Utah and pre-outing instruction involves a run down of all equipment and safety.
Trips run twice a day, at 8:30AM, and again at 2:00 PM, March through October. As this hike lies within Southern Utah’s arid desert, all guests are advised to bring ample water (a desert rule of thumb is half a liter for every hour.)

Accessibility

While exploring the outdoors is always a great family activity, the minimum age for canyoneering excursions is 8 years old. It is recommended that participants are in moderate fitness, and able to walk at least three miles over rough terrain while carrying a light pack.  For those with health conditions requiring fast-action medication such as epi-pens or glucose, please bring your required dose along.

What to Bring / Wear

  1. Do not bring valuables or anything else on the trip that you would mind having lost, wet or broken.
  2. You will be able to leave things like a change of clothes, towel, and other items in the van at the trailhead near the canyon, so please bring those along with you.
  3. Your cell phone is unlikely to work, so we suggest that you don't risk bringing it on the actual trip. If you would like to take pictures of your trip, we suggest instead that you bring a small, waterproof/shockproof camera or disposable camera.
  4. We highly suggest bringing 2-3 liters of water and a light snack in your pack for yourself. Keep in mind that you are responsible for carrying your own things, so pack light.
