When

Start/End Time: 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Goal of the clinic:

  • Learn the kayak roll. Rolling is such a unique skill. It takes time to master but is oh so cool. While swimming in whitewater is fun and all most whitewater paddlers hit a stage when it's time to learn the roll.

Who should take the clinic:

  • These clinics are for novice to intermediate paddlers who want to learn to roll. Paddlers must already be familiar with wet-exist using a spray skirt and have basic paddling skills. Our minimum age for this clinic is 14.

What will be covered:

  • We will teach the roll that works best for you. We often warm-up with a review of some paddling skills. We'll work in flatwater, concentrating on ensuring proper fit in the boat, maximum use of the hips and minimum reliance on the paddle.

  • Don't let an inability to roll hold you back! Rolling is one of the essential kayaking techniques that can make paddling a joy by lessening the fear and hassle of swimming in whitewater. Our instructors are American Canoe Association (ACA) certified and have many years of experience teaching rolling to a variety of students. Their kayaking tips can help you move from practicing hip snaps to learning the paddle motions to rolling in a logical progression.

  • Our low student-to-instructor ratio assures that you will receive the personalized attention our instruction program is known for. Our flexible instruction method is accommodating to people with different body types and makes learning fast and enjoyable.

  • On these clinics we work on our flatwater skills to improve our basic paddling techniques as well as introduce the roll for those who are without a roll as well as improving the technique of students who have begun to try rolls.

Top 3 Reason to Go

  1. Learn to roll in the protected environment of a pond.
  2. Our low instructor to student ratio provides lots of personal attention.
  3. We are flexible in our teaching, using either C-to-C, modified sweep or sweep roll technique depending on each individual's needs.

What to Wear & Bring:

You are required to wear sneakers or other shoes that can be secured to your feet. No flip-flops or Crocs!

In warm summer weather, some guests are comfortable in bathing suits/swim trunks or light layers. However, we ask you do not wear cotton, as it will keep you cold and wet throughout the trip. Wool and synthetic materials such as polypropylene, nylon and fleece, are appropriate for cooler weather and water temperatures. We suggest bringing any required medications as well as extra money for souvenirs, coin operated showers, etc.

Before the trip, please leave any and all valuables as well as your dry clothes and towels for after the trip in your locked vehicle. Expect everything you bring with you to get wet. Keep your car keys with you, as we will collect those and put them in a lock box before gearing up, then return them to you when you return at the end of the day. You may also consider bringing nose plugs and a retaining strap for your sunglasses, which can also be purchased in our shop, if necessary.

Zoar Outdoor Will Provide:

Paddling gear if needed, such as a wetsuit, paddle jacket, booties, boat, life jacket (PFD), helmet, paddle and sprayskirt (if needed). If you would like to use your own equipment and are unsure if it is appropriate for the course, please feel free to give us a call so we can discuss it with you.

  • We provide a catered picnic-style lunch on all our full day clinics.

The following statement is required by state law: "Before placing your order, please inform your server if a person in your party has a food allergy."

We do not use nuts in our food, but can not guarantee that the ingredients in our meals do not contain nuts or other food allergens. If you have food allergies or other special dietary needs, we strongly suggest you bring your own bag lunch in non-glass containers and we will pack it with the other lunches on your trip. Please inform our office at 800 532-7483 or info@zoaroutdoor.com if you intend to do this.
