Description

Multi-Day Rio Chama Rafting Trip - 3 Days, 2 Nights

Get ready for a nice relaxing 3-day float down the mighty Rio Chama River, here scenic beauty meets class 2-3 rapids. Camp along the river in a tent or sleep under the stars. This “hard to get on” permitted river flows through designated wilderness study areas allowing only a select few people to view it each year. This area is co-managed by BLM (Bureau of Land Management) and the U.S. Forest Service, allowing the preservation and use of public lands.
Camp in a tent, hammock, or sleep under the stars by the river. There will be plenty of time to check out the canyon while on and off of the river. Hanging around camp there will be time to explore or relax under the countless stars at night. We will begin the trip from El Vado Ranch on day one, spending two nights in the canyon before taking out near the Abiquiu Reservoir. All meals from lunch on day one through lunch on day three will be provided.
Our trips are designed for both seasoned rafters and beginners looking for an unforgettable outdoor experience. Here’s everything you need to know about what makes a multi-day rafting trip on the Chama River so special.

The Journey

Day 1: Setting Off - Your journey begins at our launch site, where you’ll meet your guides and fellow adventurers. After a safety briefing and equipment check, we’ll set off on the Chama River. The first day typically involves gentle rapids and ample time to enjoy the breathtaking scenery. You’ll paddle through serene stretches of water, surrounded by towering canyon walls and lush forests. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife; deer, eagles, and otters are common sights along the river.
Camp Under the Stars - As the sun sets, we’ll pull ashore at a picturesque campsite. Our guides will set up camp and prepare a delicious dinner over an open fire. Enjoy a night under the stars, sharing stories and making memories with new friends.
Day 2: Adventure Continues - Wake up to the sounds of nature and a hearty breakfast to fuel your day. The second day typically involves more time on the river. Our experienced guides will navigate you down the river.
Exploring the River - Throughout your trip, there will be opportunities to explore the natural beauty of the Chama River. Take short hikes to discover hidden areas and scenic overlooks. Our guides are knowledgeable about the local flora, fauna, and history, making your journey not only adventurous but also educational.
Day 3: The Final Stretch - The final day of your trip is a perfect blend of excitement and reflection. FAQs

Can I tip my guide?

Yes! And it is recommended. Gratuity is not included in the tour price, and it is customary to tip 18% – 22% of the tour's price. Most guides have Venmo or PayPal, and cash is always appreciated and often easier due to limited cell service.

What if there is inclement weather?

Durango Rivertrippers runs rafting trips in all weather, rain or shine. If you forget a rain jacket, rental splash gear is available.

When does the Rio Chama run?

Great question! In the spring (May & June), natural snowmelt can provide good flows, but this varies year to year. The most reliable flows are July through September, where weekend dam releases allow for runnable flows.

Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?

Yes, we can accommodate dietary restrictions for an additional fee. Please select your meal option at checkout. Specialty meals that involve dietary restrictions will be an additional $15 per day, per person ($45 total).

Can we camp at El Vado Ranch the night before the trip?

Camping is available at El Vado Lake State Park, about 15 minutes from our put-in at Coopers El Vado Ranch. El Vado Ranch also offers modest accommodations.

Can we rent camping gear?

Absolutely! If you don't have your own camping gear or don't want to travel with it, we have the following available to rent:

Multi-day Camping Package for up to 2 guests (Additional cost - $79)

  • A tent you can keep
  • Rental sleeping bags (2 sleeping bags rated for 40-55-degree weather)
  • Rental sleeping pads (two 2-3 inch thick sleeping Paco Pads).
  • Rental splash gear
  • Note: This package does not include a pillow.

If you don't need the full package, a-la-carte camping gear is also available.

I have my own life jacket. Can I wear it on the trip?

Sorry, no personal PFDs are allowed due to permitting and insurance regulations.

Can I bring a cooler?

No, no personal coolers are permitted. Our boats are meticulously rigged with specific gear. However, you're welcome to bring personal beverages, and we can store them for you.
