FAQs
What is wing foiling?
Wing surfing, also known as wing foiling or wingboarding, is a wind and water sport that combines elements of windsurfing, kiteboarding, and surfing. The rider holds a handheld wing, which is inflated and acts like a sail to catch the wind. The wing allows the rider to glide across the water on a surfboard or hydrofoil, giving a unique sensation of flying above the water as the wing catches the wind. It’s an accessible and exciting sport that allows for both flat-water riding and wave riding, making it a versatile option for wind and water sports enthusiasts.
What is hydrofoiling?
Hydrofoiling is a type of water sport that involves riding a special board with a hydrofoil attached underneath. The hydrofoil is a wing-like structure that lifts the board above the surface of the water when the rider gains speed, reducing drag and allowing for a smoother and faster ride. This "flying" sensation is what makes hydrofoiling unique. As the rider accelerates, the hydrofoil (which is typically a wing or fin) generates lift, raising the board out of the water. This reduces the contact between the board and the water, which eliminates most of the drag. The result is a smooth, gliding ride where the board hovers above the water, creating a quiet and almost effortless experience.
What ages can learn wing hydrofoiling?
Wing surfing is suitable for a wide range of ages, typically starting from around 12 years old and up. The sport is accessible to both kids and adults, though younger riders may need to build up their strength and coordination. With proper instruction and safety measures, it’s a fun and engaging sport for almost all ages, making it a great family activity. Many schools offer beginner-friendly lessons tailored to children, and the sport can be enjoyed by riders of various skill levels. As with any water sport, it's important to ensure that participants are comfortable in the water and have the necessary fitness and balance to handle the board and wing.
What skills do I need before taking lessons?
You need to know how to swim if you decide to take the kite to the water level. You do not need any prior kite or sport skills to be able to start kiteboarding. If you have skills in other sports like paragliding, skydiving, sailing, windsurfing, wakeboarding, surfing, or snowboarding, it could have a positive impact on your learning curve.
