FAQs

What is winging?

Winging / wing-surfing, also known as wing foiling or wingboarding, is a new windsport that combines elements of windsurfing, kiteboarding, and surfing. The rider holds a handheld wing, which is inflated and acts like a sail to catch the wind. The wing allows the rider to glide across the water on a surfboard or hydrofoil, giving a unique sensation of flying above the water as the wing catches the wind. It’s an accessible and exciting sport that allows for both flat-water riding and wave riding, making it a versatile option for wind and water sports enthusiasts.

What is the difference between kiteboarding and wing surfing?

The main difference between kiteboarding and wing surfing lies in the equipment and technique used. Kiteboarding relies on a large kite that is tethered to the rider via a harness, with the kite being controlled through a bar and lines. This allows the rider to be pulled across the water while controlling the kite's power and direction.

In contrast, wing surfing uses a handheld inflatable wing that the rider controls directly with their hands. There are no lines or harnesses involved; the rider's control comes from their grip on the wing, making wing surfing more intuitive for beginners.

What ages can learn wing surfing?

Wing surfing is suitable for a wide range of ages, typically starting from around 12 years old and up. The sport is accessible to both kids and adults, though younger riders may need to build up their strength and coordination. It's typically weight and weight that matters more than age.

With proper instruction and safety measures, it’s a fun and engaging sport for almost all ages, making it a great family activity. Many schools offer beginner-friendly lessons tailored to children, and the sport can be enjoyed by riders of various skill levels. As with any water sport, it's important to ensure that participants are comfortable in the water and have the necessary fitness and balance to handle the board and wing.

What skills do I need before taking lessons?

You need to know how to swim if you decide to take the kite to the water level. You do not need any prior kite or sports skills to be able to start winging. If you have skills in other sports like paragliding, skydiving, sailing, windsurfing, wakeboarding, surfing, or snowboarding, it could have a positive impact on your learning curve.
