- Maximum weight limit of 240 lbs (109 kg) per person (no exceptions) and 425 lbs (193 kg) combined for two people. For safety, weight checks will be conducted before each session. Participants exceeding the combined or individual weight capacity will not be allowed to participate, and no refunds will be issued. Please inform each person from your party.

- Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon that is unpredictable and subject to change. Therefore, it is impossible to ensure its brightness levels.
- Depending on the season, it is possible to find large amounts of sargassum (floating algae) during the tour; this is also a natural phenomenon, but it can become uncomfortable.
- At times, we experience strong winds and currents in the bay, which increases the effort of paddling and physical activity. However, you’ll be paddling out to a lagoon, so you won’t have to worry about waves in open water.

FAQs
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothes that can get wet, and bring water shoes.
What if the weather is bad?
The tour operates rain or shine, but in the event of unsafe conditions, KPR Operations Team will cancel and offer rescheduling or a refund.
Do I need experience to kayak?
A moderate skill level is required, but pre-tour training is provided.
Can I bring a camera?
Bioluminescence is almost impossible to capture with regular cameras. Plus, everything in your kayak will get wet. We strongly recommend you be careful with your camera.
If you still want to bring a camera, make sure that it is waterproof. We also recommend that you use a leash to attach it to your life vest. Do not expose expensive and DSLR cameras to futile risks. The place will be completely dark. Diving in the lagoon is prohibited. If anything falls in the water, it will be impossible to recover.
Kayaking Trip Puerto Rico gives free photos if the equipment works. We’ll upload your photos and offer you links to download your favorites. As a thank you for choosing us as your Puerto Rico operators these images are free.
Notes: Please allow 5-7 days for the link to be sent to you via email. If you would rather not have your photo taken no problem, please just notify your guides at the beginning of each excursion.
Why is swimming not allowed in the Bioluminescent Bay?
There are several reasons why swimming is not allowed in the Bioluminescent Bay. Most of them have to do with ecological impact and safety:
- To keep the waters clear and free of sedimentation. The organism that produces the bioluminescence — Pyrodinium bahamense— needs clear waters to complete the process of photosynthesis during daylight hours. If groups of people jump into the water, they will stir up the sediments from the bottom of the lagoon, making the water murky, which hinders photosynthesis and threatens the life of these glowing organisms.
- To keep the lagoon free of pollutants. Deodorants, hair gels, skin lotions, perfumes, insect repellents containing DEET, and other personal care products contain chemicals that directly affect the bioluminescent organisms of the bay.
I don’t know how to swim. Can I still go?
Of course! First, we will not be swimming on this tour. All our guests will be provided with USCG approved life vest, and it is mandatory for you to wear it while kayaking. We will be paddling through calm, protected waters, and all of our kayaks are very stable. Even if, for any reason, you do fall in, the water depth throughout the mangrove channel (where you will be kayaking most of the way) is 3 to 4 ft (0.9 to 1.2 m) deep.
Is it easy to get in and out of the kayaks?
You will board your kayak on easily accessible, shallow waters. If you need help getting on and off the kayak, our staff will gladly assist you. Your guide will begin the tour with a short orientation on the basics of kayaking, from getting in the kayak to rowing properly.
Is food included in the tour?
Our Bio Bay excursion includes SNACKS: (water, fruits, and granola bars.) However, these are not intended as dinner. We recommend you have dinner before or after the trip. There are plenty of restaurants, food trucks, and kiosks in the Las Croabas area, some of them at walking distance from Kayaking Puerto Rico’s tent and tour departure site.
Where can I learn more about bioluminescence?
Check out our blog describing bioluminescence more in depth at Bioluminescence Kayaking!
How hard is it to kayak in the Bio Bay?
This is a beginner friendly kayaking spot! The lagoon and mangrove tunnels are very calm and a great place to try kayaking for the first time.
If you are looking for more information on beginner kayaking, check out TripOutside’s blog post on Kayaking for Beginners!
When is the best time to see the bioluminescence?
The bioluminescent intensity depends on weather conditions such as rain, tide, moon phase, sunlight and many other natural factors out of our control. Ideally, the best time to visit is around the new moon and during the dry months, December to March with a midsummer dry season June to July.
Cancellation Policy
*GROUPS OF 10 OR MORE GUESTS
Groups of 10 or more guests must cancel at least 2 weeks prior to the date of the excursion in order to receive a full refund. We will maintain a full charge for any cancellations, late arrivals, requests to rebook, and “no-shows” made less than 2 weeks prior to the excursion date for any spaces we are unable to resell.
WEATHER POLICIES
These tours go out rain or shine! There is a likelihood of rain year-round in the Tropics. If you have concerns about the weather, please check the forecast in advance and make any changes during the allowable period. If the KPR Operations team calls off a tour due to safety reasons related to weather, we will notify you as soon as possible with alternatives such as rescheduling to another date, booking another tour, or a full refund. Otherwise, the cancellation, changes, and refund policy remains for any tours that are not called off by the company. Note: due to the unpredictable tropical weather, tours may be called off on-site.
FINAL AGREEMENT
We will not provide refunds for any failure to adhere to the restrictions and policies here contained. This includes but is not limited to: participant age, weight, health and physical restrictions, cancellations/reschedules past the cancellation policy window, late arrivals or no-shows.
Due to the unique nature and small size of our groups, we are forced to remain firm about our cancellation policy. Regardless of the cancellation reason, our time and fixed costs are already invested; we may even have turned down other customers by holding your space. Thank you for understanding!
