Learn to Surf in Pismo Beach, California!

Whether you’re joining an existing group or bringing your own, our surf lessons cater to all skill levels, from beginner to advanced! We keep our group lessons small with a student-to-instructor ratio of 3/4:1, allowing you to receive personalized attention to master proper surfing techniques, including paddling, positioning, standing, and getting through the waves!

Pismo Beach is the perfect surfing spot for beginners with smaller waves rolling in all summer long! We’re committed to helping you catch the waves you came for! So put on your wetsuits, bring your enthusiasm, and soon you’ll go from no experience to catching waves on your own!

Each lesson will be tailored to the group’s existing ability level, ensuring everyone progresses at their own pace. If you’d prefer a smaller group, check out our Semi-Private Surfing Lessons as well! You do not have to come with a group but if you sign up by yourself and nobody else is in that reservation time you will be charged for a private lesson.

Meet right in the Addie Street Surfer Parking Lot!
We teach our classes at the end of Park Avenue, which is a couple hundred yards south of the Pismo Beach pier. Make sure you find the white box truck with Sandbar Surf School on the driver's side door. It will be in front of the Sea Venture Hotel.

Ages & Requirements

Minimum age of 7 years old
You do not have to come with a group, but if you sign up by yourself and nobody else is in that reservation time, you will be charged for a private lesson.

FAQs

How many students in a group lesson?

Anywhere from 2 to 4 students per instructor! If you have a group larger than 5, we will add an instructor to keep the student/instructor ratio to 3/4 per instructor. But we usually overstaff. You’re worth it and your children are too. If for some rare reason you got a group lesson and no one else is in that group, you WILL be charged for a private lesson. (Sorry, just how it’s gotta be.)

What are some safety tips for surfing in California?

Respect the Ocean: Please know your skill level and avoid areas with strong currents and big waves if you are a beginner!
Understand the Local Breaks: Every surf spot is unique with waves breaking in different ways, potential hazards that are hidden from view (coral and rocks), and local surfing etiquette.
Surf with a Buddy: It is always safer to have a friend to look after each other and assist in emergencies.
Stay Hydrated and Use Sunscreen: Please use reef-safe sunscreen that won’t damage the fragile ecosystems around Hawaii.

Cancellation Policy

In case of difficult/hazardous conditions (storm, pollution, beach closure…), the instructor can decide to cancel a class. In that case, we will re-schedule the class to a later date. We’ll totally refund you if you have a class on a stormy day. Those are boo-boo conditions to learn in.

If a student cannot make it to a class, as long as we have a 24 hour’s notice, we will issue a class-credit and will reschedule the class. Jonny is easy to get ahold of in the case of emergencies or needing to switch or move dates/times around. However, if you stay up too late the night before and drink to many “lemonades” and want to cancel the morning of…No diggity. If you no-call, no-show on us…again, no diggity. Every day is a special project so we have to staff for your safety in advance.
