Description

Explore the Laguna Grande Wildlife Under the Full Moon!

Our Full Moon Fajardo Bio Bay Kayak Adventure is the perfect nature adventure under a full moon, and if your stay in Puerto Rico happens to fall during the full moon stage you don’t have to miss out on our night kayaking tours! This tour was developed as an alternative to the Bioluminescent Lagoon Kayak Adventure during the full moon cycle as the reflection of the moonlight on the surface of the lagoon makes it difficult to see the bioluminescent organisms. But that same moonlight exposes mangrove forests, eight ecosystems, bird life, second oldest lighthouse in Puerto Rico, iguanas and much more of nature's secrets that are normally overlooked on the darkest nights!
The tour will take you through a peaceful mangrove tunnel into the heart of Las Cabezas de San Juan Reserve, surrounded by the sights and sounds of wildlife. Enjoy stunning views of the rainforest, Fajardo’s iconic lighthouse, and a visit to Bird Island, home to many roosting birds. Your guide will share fascinating insights about the mangroves, wildlife, and natural history of the area, adding depth and context to the experience.

FAQs

What is the difference between your full moon tour and your Bioluminescence tour?

We offer two kayaking tours that correspond with the Lunar Cycle. During the waxing/waning moon phases, the conditions are best for viewing Pyrodinium Bahamense, a species of Dinoflagellate or the bioluminescent organism. The focus of this tour is to enjoy the glowing bioluminescence as well as visit the mangrove tunnels.

During the full moon phase, these conditions are best for viewing the moon’s reflection on the lagoon. This tour was developed as an alternative to the Bioluminescent Lagoon Kayak Adventure during the full moon cycle as the reflection of the moonlight on the surface of the lagoon makes it difficult to see the bioluminescent organism. But that same moonlight exposes mangrove forests, eight ecosystems, bird life, second oldest lighthouse in Puerto Rico, iguanas and much more of nature's secrets that are normally overlooked on the darkest nights!

What will I learn about?

Along the way you will learn about:

  1. Mangrove forest and the different species.
  2. Birdlife that inhabits the area.
  3. Aquatic marine life that uses the lagoon as an estuary.
  4. Information on the Bioluminescence organism.
  5. History of the lighthouse.
  6. Insight on seven of eight ecosystems found in the area.

Will we possibly see some bioluminescence?

Very low visibility to none is expected during Full Moon Nights. It is unlikely to be able to see the bioluminescence under a full moon but it is still there. It would be less vivid due to the brightness of the moonlight. The glow of the bioluminescent organisms is harder to see when there's more ambient light.

Visibility of bioluminescence is unpredictable and will be based on temperatures being warm, amounts of rain, cold fronts, full moon cycles, etcetera. Peak season normally is during spring and summer months where we get the highest temperatures and less rain. Lower visibility is expected during the months of November, December, January, February, and March.

Where can I learn more about bioluminescence?

Check out our blog describing bioluminescence more in depth at Bioluminescence Kayaking!

How hard is it to kayak in the Bio Bay?

This is a beginner friendly kayaking spot! The lagoon and mangrove tunnels are very calm and a great place to try kayaking for the first time.
