Description
Guided Duck Flats Sea Kayak Tour - Prince William Sound
As you paddle past a chain of small, rocky islands, keep your eyes out for resident sea otters, harbor seals, nesting bald eagles, and shorebirds that frequent the area. On sunny days, you might even spot seals sunbathing along the shoreline.
Led by our experienced local guides, this 3-hour adventure begins with outfitting and a land-based safety and paddling lesson, followed by approximately two hours of kayaking through rich coastal habitat. Along the way, your guide will share insights into the natural history of the Sound and the cultural and historical roots of Valdez. Duck Flats is an excellent introduction to sea kayaking in Alaska—calm waters, incredible wildlife, and no experience needed.

FAQs
Do I need prior kayaking experience?
No experience is necessary! Duck Flats is ideal for beginners. Your guide will provide instruction on land before launching and offer support throughout the paddle.
How long will we be on the water?
The total tour is about 3 hours, including approximately 2 hours of paddling and 1 hour for outfitting, safety briefing, and instruction.
What wildlife might I see?
Common sightings include sea otters, harbor seals, bald eagles, and seabirds. While wildlife can never be guaranteed, this area is rich with animal activity.
What kind of kayaks will we use?
We use stable, double (tandem) sea kayaks for this trip. These are ideal for long distances, variable conditions, and accommodating paddlers of all experience levels.
What if the weather is bad?
Tours operate rain or shine, and Alaska’s coastal weather can be unpredictable. Your guides will assess conditions for safety and adjust the itinerary if needed. In rare cases of severe weather, the trip may be rescheduled or refunded.
How cold is the water?
Prince William Sound’s water is very cold year-round, usually around 40–50°F (4–10°C). That’s why we provide all necessary gear, including splash skirts and PFDs (life jackets), to keep you safe and comfortable.
