Description

Explore Fajardo's Laguna Grande - Kayaking Adventure

Don’t let your day end when the sun goes down! Join an exciting kayak tour at sunset to the fascinating Laguna Grande in the town of Fajardo on the northeast corner of the island. Laguna Grande is one of Puerto Rico's unique "bio bays". Under a blanket of the night sky, you can paddle through and touch the waters that glow with bioluminescent organisms. The tour starts in the small fishing village of Las Croabas, where you will get set up with the gear you need for the adventure.
After a complete kayak “101 Safety” training, your guides will lead you across a small fisherman’s harbor to the entrance of Las Cabezas de San Juan Reserve. Here you will enter a mystical mangrove channel that leads to a peaceful place where the sights and sounds of wildlife will surround you.
As you enter the Laguna Grande bio bay, you will paddle along the edge of the mangrove forest and watch the stroke of each paddle light up a bioluminescent blue-green/white-green. You may encounter fish that look like shooting stars as they swim through the thick concentration of Dinoflagellate organisms. Marvel in the extraordinary bioluminescence as we paddle toward the rainforest and "bird island" to view the many birds that roost there at night.
We offer two kayaking tours that correspond with the Lunar Cycle. During the waxing/waning moon phases, the conditions are best for viewing the bioluminescence.  During the full moon phase, these conditions are best for viewing the moon’s reflection on the lagoon.

FAQs

What will I learn about?

Along the way you will learn about:

  1. Mangrove forest and the different species.
  2. Birdlife that inhabits the area.
  3. Aquatic marine life that uses the lagoon as an estuary.
  4. Information on the Bioluminescence organism.
  5. History of the lighthouse.
  6. Insight on seven of eight ecosystems found in the area.

Can you always see the bioluminescence?

Notice, visibility if bioluminescence is unpredictable and will be based on temperatures being warm, amounts of rain, cold fronts, full moon cycles, etcetera. Peak season normally is during spring and summer months where we get the highest temperatures and less rain.

Lower visibility is expected during the months of November, December, January, February, and March. This Bioluminescent Bay Kayak Eco Adventure is focused on the seven eco systems, flora, fauna, ecology, history and cultural aspects of Las Cabezas de San Juan Natural Reserve as a whole.

Very low visibility to none is expected during Full Moon Nights.

When is the best time to see the bioluminescence?

The bioluminescent intensity depends on weather conditions such as rain, tide, moon phase, sunlight and many other natural factors out of our control. Ideally, the best time to visit is around the new moon and during the dry months, December to March with a midsummer dry season June to July.

Where can I learn more about bioluminescence?

Check out our blog describing bioluminescence more in depth at Bioluminescence Kayaking!

How hard is it to kayak in the Bio Bay?

This is a beginner friendly kayaking spot! The lagoon and mangrove tunnels are very calm and a great place to try kayaking for the first time.

If you are looking for more information on beginner kayaking, check out TripOutside’s blog post on Kayaking for Beginners!

What is the difference between your full moon tour and your Bioluminescence tour?

We offer two kayaking tours that correspond with the Lunar Cycle. During the waxing/waning moon phases, the conditions are best for viewing Pyrodinium Bahamense, a species of Dinoflagellate or the bioluminescent organism. The focus of this tour is to enjoy the glowing bioluminescence as well as visit the mangrove tunnels.

During the full moon phase, these conditions are best for viewing the moon’s reflection on the lagoon. This tour was developed as an alternative to the Bioluminescent Lagoon Kayak Adventure during the full moon cycle as the reflection of the moonlight on the surface of the lagoon makes it difficult to see the bioluminescent organism. But that same moonlight exposes mangrove forests, eight ecosystems, bird life, second oldest lighthouse in Puerto Rico, iguanas and much more of nature's secrets that are normally overlooked on the darkest nights!
