Moab Whitewater Kayaking Course for Beginners & Intermediates

Are you ready to learn a fun new way to get on the river? Join us for a whitewater kayaking course in Moab! You'll learn the fundamentals of whitewater kayaking, hone your skills, and have fun on the river. Your instructors will be there every step of the way to provide support and pinpoint new students' challenges, helping you overcome the beginner learning curve and setting you up for a lifetime of whitewater adventures.

‍Our weekend intensive kayak school is one evening (Friday) and two full days (Sat/Sun) designed to take your kayaking to the next level. We offer two programs: a beginner and intermediate level course, running different sections of water in the Moab area.
‍Taught by ACA-certified Kayak Instructors, this hardshell river kayaking course will take your kayaking to the next level while enjoying the beautiful desert rivers of Moab.
Beginner Level: This weekend intensive course will progress you through the kayak basics from little to no hardshell experience up to confidently running class 2-3 river. You'll gain all the skills and safety knowledge to prepare you to kayak independently. If you have little to no experience in a hardshell whitewater kayak, this is the course for you!
Intermediate Level: This course will take your kayaking skills to the next level. Whether it's practicing your combat roll, tightening up your eddy turns, or controlling your edges, our instructors will coach you to tune your skills and build your confidence. If you have a foundation for kayaking in a hardshell whitewater kayak, this course is for you!

Beginner Whitewater Kayaking Course Itinerary

Day 1: Kayaking Essentials
This is an introduction to kayaking in hardshell kayaks with skirts in flat water at Ken's Lake. We will begin by reviewing equipment and how to fit properly into your kayak. Then we will practice wet exits, self-rescue, paddle strokes, edging, and posture. Learn the essentials of safety and communication before you enter the dynamic river environment.
Day 2: Introduction to River Kayaking
‍It's time to apply what you learned on day 1! We'll cover basic river knowledge, hazards, and safety protocols. Then we'll apply lesson 1 skills in moving water. Basic moves such as the eddy turn, ferry, and peel out will be taught, as well as handling small river obstacles. You will have the opportunity to refine paddle strokes, play games, and increase comfort in your boat. This section of the river includes small rapids and slow-moving smooth water. We will encounter several class 1-2 rapids where you learn to tee up, charge waves, and control your edges.
Day 3: Refining Skills
‍We will continue reinforcing safety protocol and understanding river hydrology. Continued practice and coaching on the skills learned on days 1 and 2 will help you hone in understanding of the maneuvers and practice the skills. The stretch of the river will be similar to day 2 with both rapids and smooth water sections, but these rapids will be bigger than those encountered on day 2. An introduction to rolling techniques will be included as well as self-rescue and buddy-rescue options.

Intermediate Whitewater Kayaking Course Itinerary

Day 1: Skills Review
Our first day will be about our instructors getting to know you, your current skill level, and your goals. We'll start on a fun class 2 area where we can review paddle strokes, eddy turns, peel-outs, ferrying, and rolls.
Day 2: Refining New Skills & Techniques
We'll fine-tune the forward stroke form and efficiency, and focus on edging and control. We'll get into bracing and practice eddy turns, as well as an introduction to surfing and playing in small river features. This river section will be class 2 rapids.
Day 3: River Safety & Independence
We’ll get into greater depths on how to read water, scout rapids, and identify any hazards that may be in the river. We’ll continue to practice skills that will prepare you for bigger water. Jet ferries, catching micro eddies, rolling in current.

FAQs

Can I bring my own kayak?

If you already own your kayaking gear, you are welcome to bring it to practice in your gear. However, all gear is included, so it's not necessary if you would prefer to use our gear.

Do I have to be physically fit to kayak?

You'll want to be generally active, but you certainly don't need athlete-level fitness. When you're hardshell kayaking, you are individually responsible for paddling the kayak, making it inherently more physical than rafting. Even more important than physical fitness is a positive, adventurous attitude!

Is there a weight limit for hardshell kayaks?

Our larger hardshell kayaks have a maximum weight range of about 250 pounds, but because all bodies are shaped differently, that can mean a lot of different meanings! The width of the cockpit (the part of the boat that you sit in) is about 21.5" wide, and you will need to be able to sit inside the cockpit to use a hardshell kayak. Another thing to note is that paddlers who are very top-heavy may have a more difficult time balancing.

That said, if you exceed the weight limit but would still like to learn how to paddle, you're welcome to join the course and paddle an inflatable kayak, which has a maximum weight of 375 pounds. That way, you can still learn all of the technical aspects of kayaking, such as the basic strokes, entering and exiting eddies, and more.

Do I need to know how to roll to start kayaking?

No, you do not need to know how to roll to start kayaking! The Kayak Roll is the technique of rolling a capsized kayak upright. While the roll will be important as you progress, it's more important to learn essential paddling techniques to control your boat so that you can paddle efficiently and stay upright.

Will I get stuck in the kayak when I flip upside down?

After arriving at the lake, the first thing we learn in the beginner course is the "wet exit," which is the technique used to get out of your kayak when you flip over. Your instructors will teach you everything you need to know in a calm, controlled, environment, so you can get comfortable with how it feels to be upside down before going out into a dynamic river environment.

Is there a minimum age?

Ages 15+ are welcome to join, but paddlers under 18 must take the course with a parent or guardian. While we don't have a specific minimum age, this course is not recommended for younger children - it's highly instructional and geared towards adults, so anyone under 18 should be comfortable in a structured environment.

How big are the groups?

We maintain a 1:4 instructor-student ratio to ensure individualized attention. Courses will have a maximum of 8 students.

I am just one person. Can I join a group?

‍Yes, you can sign up solo and you will be added to a group. Folks commonly join our kayaking courses solo, so you're likely to come out of the course with new friends and paddling partners! If no one else registers, you will be offered the option to reschedule or receive a refund.

Is gratuity included?

No, but if you feel your guide has done a good job at keeping you entertained and sharing the wonderful river environment with you feel free to tip them. 12-30% is widely accepted as the industry norm; tipping is always appreciated but never expected.

Are there changing facilities at the shop?

Yes, there are changing rooms available so you can get into dry clothes as soon as you return!

Can I bring a phone or a camera?

We don't recommend bringing anything on the river that you don't want to lose. You'll be able to lock any valuables in your car, and we'll hold on to your keys while you're on the river.
