Description

2 Hour Shem Creek & Crab Bank Island Kayak Tour

Paddle through the scenic waters of Shem Creek on this 2-hour guided kayak tour, where Charleston’s coastal charm meets serene Lowcountry beauty. Our paddle begins in a saltwater marsh area in historic Shem Creek, where you'll paddle past the shrimp boats and restaurants that line the creek. Keep an eye out, because you might even catch a glimpse of dolphins playing in the water alongside shrimp boats. As you head toward Crab Bank Island, a protected bird sanctuary, which is home to thousands of nesting shorebirds including the state-threatened species Wilsons Plover and Eastern Brown Pelicans. You’ll be surrounded by stunning marshlands and tidal creeks, offering the perfect opportunity to spot a variety of bird species and marine life such as dolphins and manatee. This tour also includes incredible views in the distance of the historic Charleston Harbor, Castle Pinckney, and Ft. Sumter. Whether you're a seasoned kayaker or a beginner, this tour provides a peaceful yet exciting way to experience one of Charleston’s most beloved waterways. Perfect for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and adventure seekers alike!

Comfortable clothing that you are ok getting wet is ideal. Many people opt for shorts and a t-shirt that are quick-drying. For cooler temperatures, dress in layers that protect from wind or moisture. Tennis shoes, water shoes, or other shoes that will stay on your feet are preferred over flip-flops.
Hat, bottled water or gatorade, sunscreen and sunglasses are also recommended. Bottled water can be purchased at our neighbor, Mt. Pleasant Seafood. We offer hats, visors, sunscreen, and small drybags for purchase at our location.

FAQs

Is there a minimum number of guests?

There is a two-person minimum. You could be asked to reschedule if this isn't met.

Do I need a reservation?

Reservations are essential, as we need to prepare the boats and guides. Please reserve a minimum of 24 hours in advance, but we recommend reserving as soon as you know the date you want to go to guarantee availability.

Where should I park?

Most parking is paid parking. You will need a phone to pay via text/mobile website. A few free spots may be available along Shrimp Boat lane parallel, facing the marsh or facing Coleman Blvd. These spots do not have signs in front of them.

What happens if I'm scheduled for a tour but it's rainy?

If it’s light rain, your tour can still go out. If there is lightning or high winds, no customers will be allowed on the water. We will call you before the tour to let you know if we must cancel. It can be rainy in one part of Charleston and still be beautiful weather at your tour location; if it is raining where you are, that does not necessarily mean your tour will be canceled. Dolphins love light rain and sometimes tours can be very interesting watching them play in it.

Can I bring my dogs?

No dogs are permitted on this guided tour.

Do I need previous experience?

No experience necessary! We will give you detailed instructions on how to safely paddle and maneuver in the water. Our guides will help you in and out of the water as well.

How much should I tip my tour guide?

If you had a great time, 15-25% is customary for tours.

Is there a place to leave my belongings?

We suggest you lock valuables in your car, and we are happy to hold keys for you. If you want to take your cell phone on the water with you, you may wish to bring a dry bag or we have them available for sale on location.

Cancellation Policy

If you cancel your tour or rental 24 hours in advance there will be no cancellation fee charged and you will be refunded the full amount. Cancellation of tours/rentals within 24 hours, you will be charged the full amount of your trip. Keeping our tours small and our guides on call, other clients were prevented from booking and the guide schedule was impacted.
Inclement weather cancellations will be determined by Nature Adventures when winds are too high and/or there is heavy rain/lightning. You will not be charged a cancellation fee and will be refunded the full amount if you are unable to move to a different date and time.
